THEME: Where’s The Beef?
What makes a hamburger a hamburger? To look at this question another way, what can you take out from a hamburger without changing the definition?
If you put lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, sauce and cheese between two pieces of bread, you get… well, an odd sandwich.
If you go to any outdoor barbecue and put a grilled beef patty between two buns however, most people would call that a burger (albeit a lame one).
…but does that patty need to be made of meat? We take a look this week at two different burgers that have substituted out the most iconic part of a burger for a different type of patty to see if they can hold a candle up to their carnivorous counterparts.
Name: Black Bean Burger

Two slices of what appeared to be a wheat bun. There was very minor grilling but besides that, these buns could’ve have come straight out of the bag.
The black bean patty was surprisingly good considering how rarely either of us ate vegetarian burgers! It didn’t quite have a meat-like consistency and was more mushy as if all the ingredients were ground together but you could make out the individual beans that were used in the burger. It was flavorful and although not meat, definitely held its own as the main part of the burger, just as a meat patty would have.
With a heavy heart, we believe that our order was served incorrectly… According to the website, the Black Bean Burger should be as follows:
..and yet, other than the cucumbers and a little bit of cheese/sauce (which might have been the hummus?), our burger did not look remotely like the picture above. Regardless, the ingredients that did end up making it on the burger were the cucumbers and cheese, of which type we couldn’t identify. We could see where they were going with the cucumber in order to add a refreshing crunch but because of what seems to be an incomplete order, we can’t fairly assess what 317 was trying to do with this burger.
Maybe this would’ve been different if we actually got the burger that was advertised but since we didn’t, it just felt like someone decided to throw on two cucumber slices on at the very end to give this burger some color. The bland yet crisp cucumbers did balance out the stronger flavors of the black bean patty but the cheese wasn’t particularly strong so it didn’t do much other than add texture. Everything tasted good, but it was just a plain burger in the end.

Buttered and toasted right on the grill, this potato bun was soft and chewy but still held all the insides of the burger together without becoming mushy.
We’re not going to lie. As two guys who eat a lot of meat, this was one of the best burger patties we’ve had. The patty was made of beans, corn and a variety of spices and had a ton of flavor in it. You could pick out the individual pieces of beans and corn used to make the patty, but they weren’t packed together so tightly that it ended up mushy – it felt like biting into a real burger patty.
The rest of the ingredients in the burger were the textbook classics found in a good burger – fresh lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, and American cheese. Because the black bean patty brought all the uniqueness to the burger, there was no need for anything special with the ingredients.
With the chipotle black bean patty being such a rockstar, we felt they made a great decision just throwing on the standard array of burger ingredients and letting the tried and true method stand. From the outside it looked like a regular hamburger, but the spicy patty was able to deliver a more flavorful and unique experience, enveloped by the more familiar tastes of the cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and mayo.

Chipotle Black Bean Burger
Once upon a time, we would have said that although you can make a tasty substitute for meat, you can’t get the real deal without putting actual beef in a burger.
Now that it’s 2017, our views have changed and Boogie Burger was the one to change it. In the past, although we’ve always noticed the vegetarian alternatives on a burger menu, why bother trying something unfamiliar when there’s something that you know for a fact you’ll enjoy?
Well, thanks to this week’s theme, we had a reason to go outside of our comfort zone and we’re glad we did. The Black Bean Burger from 317 Burger definitely showed that you can make a tasty substitute for real meat with their bean patty, but it was Boogie Burger that showed us that they didn’t need to “meat” expectations – their black bean burger is even better than what you’re used to. Had they used a regular patty, it would have been a great burger but by using their own spicy and flavorful bean patty, they were able to elevate it to something even better than we would’ve expected out of a bean burger.
For the economically conscious – Boogie Burger takes it this week in both taste AND price!

The 317 Burger’s Black Bean Burger did come with fries though, although they weren’t anything too special.
